I thought that a 3-wire system was permitted on single family dwellings, at one time. As was 3 -wire feeders to ranges & dryers. 4-wire first require on manufactured homes, then latter on houses :?

Not for a sub panel in the same structure though.

You are correct. 3 wire was allowed to ranges and dryers. 4 wire now.
Like Dave said, not for a subpanel in same structure though.

Same Cable realy does mean the same one.

Same Cable realy does mean the same one.

I think I had answered this. No job , does not want to replace feeder, customer on their own.

You did answer it. Some here look for misconduct when none is actually being contemplated by the person they are replying to. What makes a lot of us think that way is the Jack Legged work we have all seen. I try to never assume that someone who cares enough to ask the question is trying to do shoddy work. In my not unlimited experience the nocturnal aviation operators never even question the non code complaint techniques that they use.

That said the "same raceway, cable, or otherwise run with the circuit conductors." language is only meant to cover the use of listed single conductor USE and UF cables which must be run in the same trench, individual conductors run in the same cable tray, and similar situations. It was never intended to cover adding a conductor outside of an existing cable. The entire reason for naming Raceway and Cables specifically is to require that in either of those cases all conductors of the circuit must be in the same listed or recognized assembly.

The only place I ever found it useful to add an Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) to an existing circuit was when upgrading the grounding on Farms. Where the original conductors between buildings were open wire on insulators or messenger supported wiring it was not a violation to add the additional conductor to those Feeder circuits. Although I never had the opportunity to do so I would not hesitate to convert Triplex to Quadplex as long as the additional conductor I was adding was the same conductor and insulation type as the two insulated conductors that were already there.
