We have a 480V 3-Phase 30A Hydraulic Shop Lift that we would like to plug into an existing 480V 3-Phase 50A outlet. Can we replace the 30A plug on the lift cord with a 50A plug so that we can use the existing 50A receptacle?

Thanks for the help.

I would think that the lift came with a 30 amp plug for a reason and that it's connected to not a 50 amp but a 30 amp circuit. A single 50 amp receptacle on a 30 amp circuit would be code compliant.

I guess it comes down to what does the instructions say that came with the plug say? does it have a minimum conductor size listed?

If I had to guess, the OCPD rating of a 50A branch circuit might well be adequate for a motor circuit of this size.

The only question is whether the 30A plug can be protected by a 50A branch CB.

Article 406 (receptacles and plugs) does not seem to require a 30A OCPD on a 30A plug so i would just make up an adapter.
