Ah, okay.

Still not visualizing where you are putting the reducing bushing though. :-?
The reducer bushing inserts into conduit end of the MA (or one end of the coupling if using a box adapter). The OD of a reducer bushing is the same as the larger conduit's OD... and the ID is tapered and sized to accept the OD of the smaller size conduit.

I didn't even know these existed! If I was thinking around the same lines, I'd probably have just cheated with a piece of 3" conduit, it would have mated up fairly similarly. ;) :D
