I have always counted up a box as followes...
1 volume allowance for each conductor
1 volume allowance for the grounds as a whole
1 volume allowance for each device in the box.

I recently read through 314.16.B.4 and discovered that the code calls for a double box allowance for each device. I have always allowed 2 for GFCIs and dimmers, now I believe that

Re: 314.16.B.4 clarification rev.2

Thanks. 314.16.B.4 give the req. for calculating devices for cubic inches in a box. I have been counting my devices as 1 volume allowance. 314.16.b.4 calls for two. Why was I always tought to count for 1. Did the code change or am i missing an exception somewhere?

Mark,

The code changed. Back in '84 NEC it was one deduction for a Device and in 1990 NEC it was two. So, it changed either in 1987 or 1990. (My guess is 1990)

Re: 314.16.B.4 clarification rev.2

I assume that this now applies to all devices, rather than just dimmers and GFCIs?

Its crazy that I have never been cought by this in the 10 or 12 houses I have done in the last 10 years. I put in really elaborate stuff like multi-bulb fixtures where I put white bulbs in one and yellow in the other outside, switched seperatly. I double up all the rececptcles around entertainment centers. The last house I did was 3700 sqft, 1 level, that contained 82 recepticles and 94 switches. Floods on all corners are controllable from beside the master bed.
With all those wires, you would think someone would have counted sometime.

Now I realize that the boxes were overloaded.

Thanks for the help.Very cool forum!
