(1) Nails and Screws. Nails and screws, where used as a fastening means, shall be attached by using brackets on the outside of the enclosure, or they shall pass through the interior within 6 mm (1/4 in.) of the back or ends of the enclosure.
I read this code section as not allowing screws to be used for securing this box:

Through the two little holes in the side.

Does anyone agree or disagree?

Re: 314.23(B)(1)

Hi Ryan,

The box has holes within 1/4" of the back. In fact, they are in the back!
or they shall pass through the interior within 6 mm (1/4 in.) of the back or ends of the enclosure.
I guess I don't see the problem?

neither of the two boxes you have posted will comply with the requirement of 314.23(A)(1). The nails or screws need to be in the 'back' (1/4inch) of the box. The reason is obvious.

Thanks Pierre, I agree.

Re: 314.23(B)(1)

The handbook says "This requirement prevents the nails from interfering with the installation of devices".

I think "pass through the interior" means a nail that passes through one side of the box, through the inside of the box, and out the other side into the stud.

I think that the intent of this rule was as Steve stated in the previous post. However the actual words prohibit internal screws unless they are in the back 1/4".

Re: 314.23(B)(1)

It says back or ends. I assume ends means the sides, like in the original picture. A screw through those holes will stick out less than 1/4" into the box and won't interfere with the wires, which is what the rule is for. And what else would the holes in the box be for? :)
