Ok I was quite supprised today to learn that residential houses are not for me.
I gave the HO the estimate at $34k
she said the low bid was 9K and the high bid was 12K.

Don't even let those prices bother you. There are people out there bidding projects like this every day that don't have the slightest idea what they are doing.

A few years ago I bid a house at around $28K and the builder got a bid of $11K and he took it. But that's not what it cost him to get the house finished, before it was over he ended up spending around $36K. I think 3 different contractors ended up working on the project and it took over a year to complete.

Just keep bidding high on projects like this until you get one and then see if you get rich on it. You won't. You will just find out that you are glad you didn't bid any cheaper.

Don't feel bad you will have 9 k in material by the first day
This is how I will handle it.
1 I assume that you were extremely detailed in your proposal...
2 I would call and say let me come by and sit down with you and your husband and compare these invoice. (bring a pound cake or something)
3 I know that the other guys bid to the print.. no a/c no heater no home runs etc... I go against this all the time.
4 compare apples to apples and you will come on top. Your honesty and your word is what they are buying here and last night you were confident.
Don't lower your number it take creditability away from you. Remove your options... save 1000 and buy battery power candles.. use duplex and toggle and save 500 Etc..
That is how you lower you price...

I cant compete with those companies. I dont have $10 per hour employees working as electricians. I feel that these companies are either not including everything in thier bid that I did or they may just be lowballing work to keep thier employees busy so they dont loose them.

I dont feel bad I just think that I bid on something different that the prices shes comparing me to. If I were to wire that house to code min I would also be in that price range with no problem. all the extras add up quick though.

If the HO's do not want to sit down with you to compare what you offer verses the others walk away happy knowing they will get screwed. 9k might cover material and maybe some labor but that is it if they get every thing you listed.
