Good morning to all,
We are building a new distribution warehouse in Tennessee, I have been asked to lay out the details in regards to equipment locations. I would like to locate 3- 36V battery chargers with in 20 foot of the MDP and a B.B. I have read 511.3 and 511.10 in the 2002 NEC edition but would be curious to here other interputations. I realize batteries produce hydrogen gas but how much do I get worried about and change my location. I have been keep my thoughts simple for example, the charger itself has 480V within itself so how?s the location near the MDP going to matter.

Have a good day and thank you for your time

NFPA 70E has some good guidelines about batteries, charging, and ventilation.

Also, most mfg websites have information about H2 evolution during charging.

Give those two sources a try.

Why would 511 have anything to do with it?

I don't know that the little bit of hydrogen (if any at all) generated from a battery charger in an open area requires classification.

LHarrington,

I recently relocated 70 480vac/36vdc battery chargers at a parts distrb.

warehouse. There was no thru the roof venting at all, What they do have are

two 24" fans with sail switches in series controlling 225a panel contactors.

This is in an open area (no walls ). IMO you will be fine with only 3 units.

I should add, check with your local Building Dept., they may have their own

opinion of things!! Good Luck.
