Is there anything I may be missing that says a cable tray for data (cat5/6) can't be tight up to a drop ceiling?

Not that I can see, barring blocking any tiles that will be need to be removed to access VAV boxes, junction boxes, etc.
I assume you are running the cable tray under and not over the drop ceiling.

Its going under the grid. I'm not installing it, was just asked by the GC as he was laying out the server room ceiling. I told him to call the IT guy as although I could think of a code issue having the tray almost touching the ceiling, the guys that require a 2" conduit for one cat5 may need a few feet of clearance.:roll:

2" is too small, they usually put a pull string in with the 1 Cat 5/6 and request a
4".:grin:
