Not familiar with the process of wire nut manufacturing , but maybe they over tempered those springs, and then dipped them before they were cool enough, causing a weakened plastic jacket when everything cooled/setup?
The Ranger line of 3M wire nuts are made from hard, brittle plastic. They are all crackable. Every batch is that way.
 
I think it's a cold weather thing. When I worked in the cold weather, sometimes when I would these off the truck in the winter, they would crack on me. Never had a problem with them in warmer climates.
