I was recently having a discussion with a fellow electrician. He was trying to tell me that you cannot enter into the side of a 4" octagon box. One of these:

He quoted 314.2. After listening for a minute I asked why he thought that an octagon box is a round box? He said that he and many other electricians always called that box a 4" round box hence the confusion on his part. Does anyone else refer to a 4" octagon box, as a 4" round box?

we call those 8b's around these parts. I don't know why we call it that, but it does have 8 sides. it isn't round.

He quoted 314.2.

Tell him to re-read 314.2 again. The whole idea is to avoid having locknuts trying to bite into a curved surface. Then have him note that the KO's on an octagon box are in the flat surfaces, and not the rounded sides.

Yup.
The picture shows a 4" round box ~ although it's an octagon box. I haven't seen a real round box installed ever...I've seen them installed after the fact, but never been on the installing end of one

Must be an New Jersey thing. The guy tells me that everyone calls them round boxes.

No sir! That is the finest polished Aluminum box that your eyes ever saw! Just look at those bosses, willing to accept only the the best threads. I will sell you, Mr Iwire, ten of them for a mere $500 dollars? Such a deal to you only! PM we might offer you a "special" discount.

How can I argue with that.

Dennis,

I'll tell you what that speed is, as soon as I get back from Iwire's place. Think i'll get theire at about double that speed to close this deal!

I agree with the rest of the forum, what you are showing is a octagon box. Pancake box is round as others have stated.
