4" Octagon Box

I was recently having a discussion with a fellow electrician who just received his, ink isn't dry yet, electrical license. He was trying to tell me that you cannot enter into the side of a 4" octagon box. One of these:

He quoted 314.2. After listening for a minute I asked why he thought that an octagon box is a round box? He said that he and many other electricians always called that box a 4" round box hence the confusion on his part. Does anyone else refer to a 4" octagon box, as a 4" round box?

You need to send him to the boiler room for a cup of steam.:)
 
314 16(A) shows round/octagonal for the box trade size chart.
At one time they installed round boxes, but it was said earlier I've seen them already installed, but never new.
Their probably only mentioned in the chart because they are left in place on remodels.
