I designed a circuit for a 40 hp baler. I added a 100A circuit breaker to a panelboard with #4 wires (upsized for voltage drop) to a 40 hp baler. I did not have the baler equipment diagram at the time. It has a control panel with a 100A breaker. can i consider this breaker supplementary overcurrent protection and keep the #4 branch circuit wiring and 100A panelboard breaker, or do I need to increase the wire size?

I think your circuit would be a feeder and it sounds like there are additional loads other than the 40 hp motor. The conductors would need to be 100% of the non-continuous plus 125% of the continuous per article 215. But that aside, the manufacturer probably calls out a a 100 amp circuit which is what will be needed because of 110.3(B).

If the baler is the only load you can keep the 100 on the feeder per 430.62
