I would say "no" unless you check the ballast label, or check with the manufacturer. Discharge lighting ballasts are usually made for a specific lamp's current.

Re: 400 watt metal halide

Larry's correct in saying that you need to see what the the?ballast has listed. Your chances are that if it had a 400 watt MH lamp in it that a 250 watt bulb won't work. Check the ballast listing and see what bulbs can be place in that fixture. If you install the incorrect bulb in this type of fixture, it could lead someone to a fire.

NO, NO, NO!!!

Using a 250 watt MH in a 400 watt fixture will do sevral things.
1. The bulb will run very hot
2. It will seem to burn brighter than the 400 does
3. It wont last very long
4. It could shatter and cause a fire from the hot glass
5. It can cause the ballast to fail by over heating it
Not a good idea as it also voids any warranty or the UL listing of the fixture.

HID type fixtures have to have the correct bulbs, some of the small HPS will run a small range of bulbs IE. 50 watt and 70 watt but there are a very few that will.

Re: 400 watt metal halide

Do different wattage MH lamps have different sockets to prevent all the thinks hurk mentioned?

Re: 400 watt metal halide

No they don't have different screw bases depending on wattage. The small wattage up to 150W (I don't think any higher) are available in medium base. The higher wattages are all mogul base. In HPS some lower wattages are available in either medium or mogul base. I don't believe that's true of MH.

Re: 400 watt metal halide

Reading up on how HID lighting works would be a suggestion. I did have a resource online that would be a nice, informative item for you and others and myself too, but I don't have it anymore.
If someone else has a link to a valuable resource that describes the differences in HID lights and how HID lighting functions, that would be welcome by me, also.
Thank you

Re: 400 watt metal halide

By aelectricalman: below 400W are required to be med (edison)
Not true I install hundreds of 150, 250, 320PS bulbs with mogul bases, I don't know if there is a requirment but in this range they are manufactured with both bases and the medium base can be adapted to fit the same wattage fixtures with a mogul socket.
