400A Service from Shop to Home

Back to Electrofelon's and other's suggestion to run Meter base (with 3 quad lugs) > multiple service entrance cables > 2 disconnects on the first building and 2 at the house....

I just talked to our local POCO, EPB, who stated that while EPB doesn't get into the number of service entrance cables exiting the meter base, he had been told by electricians that you couldn't have more than two 200A panels off of a 400A service. This was second hand info from him. I have no knowledge about the code on that. I know that in theory, if each panel pulled maximum amperage, which never happens, the POCO line side would be overloaded. What's the rule on this?
230.80

I now have the final answer from local POCO. They will provide (at my cost) a trans-socket from which I can run multiple disconnects, multiple buildings. that should give me more than enough. theirs is rated up to 1200A.

I would take a serious look at your projected load.
The trans-socket it a hefty expense when in all likelihood you can use a 400 amp meter base.
With the proper lugs there is no reason you can't supply the three panels from that meter base,.
