Does 410.16(c) mean the grid and the luminaires shall be fastened to the building, or just the ceiling grid? I have also looked through 300.11. In both articles I have concluded the luminiares shall be fastened to the ceiling grid with appropriate means. Does that sound right? I have heard of some inspectors wanting a separate means of support. Just seeking other opinions.
 
All that is required by the NEC is that the fixtures be supported to the grid per the wording of 410.16.

There are other codes that may require the fixtures be supported from the structure such as seismic issues, unfortunately there are some inspectors that just think there is a requirement and actually don't know why they are demanding you do it nor can they provide you with any back up to their demands.

I think that Dennis put it in simple terms. I've heard of inspectors requiring chains to the structure but as Roger pointed out this isn't required by the NEC.
 
However, the requirement may be made by the owner, arhcitect, engineer, or anyone else. I've seen & done it a lot in school, hospitals, retail, commercial, etc. Check the spec book.

Around here its different in every county. I get the impression that the Fire Marshall dictates this. After all, those are the guys that have to chop those ceilings down.

Code says attached to the grid. If firemarshall wants hangers to the joists, that's in adition to the grid atachment. Attached to the grid will keep them up because of the grid hangers.

I actually went thru this entire exercise a few years ago; purchased the seismic code that related, etc. In the end it was an expense I didn't need to bear - I knew that going in, but somehow the task landed on my lap. :mad:
 
The only time that I have had to tie off lites to the building structure it
self is when the inspector was asked by the fire dept to do so.They say
if a fireman has to pull down tiles to get to a fire, they don't want the
fixtures falling on them.I'm not a fireman, however I can see there point.
So I just comply with what they ask.
 
Fire Marshall says the we have to do it here also for the same reasoning. The building inspector also likes to see it done, due to the luminaries falling down in an earthquake. Haven't had one here in forever, although we are sitting on the New Madrid fault.
