I have an Inspection tomorrow on a 4160 volt substation. The building is a highrise former DOT building and has been retro'd for another gov facility. POCO supplies 4160 to the penthouse at substation all else is typically bucked down 480 and then 208/120.....what should I be looking for in this 4160? I have never inspected this type or worked on this voltage before in my life. The testing company has been through it as in what Zog and Brian Gaquin perform but I have no idea what to look for. I am in my realm at 480 but otherwise you know......Also the placement of the equipment I did months ago per 110.34...all was good.

Since you have mentioned about placement of equipment, I will not bother you with the clearances. ;)

Some other items to start off with.

Part VIII of Article 230 is a good place to start reviewing. It will guide you back to the previous Parts of Article 230 and Article 490. See also Part II of Article 300.

You mention the penthouse as the location, which to me means installation of Service conductors through the building?
If the conductors are supplied by the utility, then there are some considerations as to these conductors installed inside the building (my guess is they are inside). See 230.70 and 230.6

Since the SE conductors are traveling up such a long riser, chocking is an issue. More of an issue if these conductors are inside of the building and they plan to use 230.6(2), as you will need access every so many feet depending on the size of the conductors, which makes the chocking method chosen important.

Also, I noticed on the last 13,800V service I inspected, that the bending radius of the conductors was too sharp. 4160V is more suspectable to the sharp bending radius than lower voltage conductors.

Follow the testing guys around, ask them questions about what they are looking for and stay out of thier way as much as possible. This is all they do and if you are nice to them they will teach you everything you need to know about this gear.

Zog and Pierre,

All went well today, I am in the office now. Potomac Testing was on site and learned a lot on inspecting this voltage. Zog the PM you sent me and the advice was simply awesome. Thanks again. I am sure I will be asking more regarding 4160.....have 2 more to do there.

I know the Potomac guys pretty well, will be seeing them in 2 weeks at the NETA conference, good guys.
