How does one apply these different, but related sections in regards to disconnecting means for room A/C units?

440.14 is for all AC units in general. 440.63 applies only to cord-connected units.

Not sure where 440.143 is.

Looks like a fine location for you to work on some proposals

In reverse order, it woud seem 440.63 is for single phase room air conditioners, allowing cord and plug with readily acessible manual control or readily accessible disconnect.

440.14 is for any A/C or refrig equipment and allows cord & pulg disconnect is accessible. (perhaps behind a panel restricitng occupant [child] accessbru allwoing access to reapir personnel.

440.13 seems "General" allwoing cord & plug for a/cs refrigs, frinking countains, beverage coolers etc.

To me 440.14 and 440.63 are provisions that place a bit of restriction on specific appliances lised uner 440.13

When reading these different sections, it is a not hard to believe that so many find the NEC confusing.
