I was in a plant where they were running 3 conductor w/ground cable from the bus boxes to their equipment for 25' + distances without using cable tray or conduit. Most cases the cables ran to over the equipment and hung down from a single rubber tube covered chain loop tied to a beam rafter. Does code allow for this? Does not look right to me.

Looks like it could be in compliance with 368.8(B). You would have to review the installation with attention to all of the requirements in that section.

mchenney,

This is without code book,I thought 6ft. of cord from Bus Duct was the norm.

Re: 480 V / 200 Amp drop from BUS head to Ind. equipment

Been awhile for me but I would have thought 6' too, unless maybe allowed for a TRUE temporary installation, which is NOT the case here. They were using BIG Killum type strain relief on both ends, bus header disconnect / fuse box and control cab / disconnect ( w/ a ground lead too )

Gentlemen,I have my '05 book handy..

Article 368 Busways

(1)The cord shall be attached to the building by approved means.

(2) The length of the cord or cable from the busway plug-in device to suitable tension take-up support device shall not exceed 1.8m(6ft).

(C)*The cord and cable shall be installed as a verticle riser from the tension take-up support device to the equipment served.

(D)Strain relief cable grips shall be provided for the cord or cable at the busway plug-in device and equipment terminations.

Exception to (B)(2): In industrial establishments only, where the conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified persons service the installation, lengths exceeding 1.8m(6ft) shall be permitted between the busway plug-in device where the cord or cable is supported at intervals not exceeding 2.5m(8ft).

This feeds a production machine that factory laborers operate and is in an oily environment. I think it was a non-robotic welding machine.

I can't see it as being to code unless in a locked controlled cage or room?

Re: 480 V / 200 Amp drop from BUS head to Ind. equipment

The 6 foot distance is to the first "support" not the overall length of the drop. All of the exceptions are to this 6' distance.

I see no code violation based on the information given in the original posting.
