we have been called to hook up a fountian at a new residential complex . the fountian has already been installed in the large pond the fountian company also mounted the controller for the pump motor and the 4 floating lts. my problem is the voltage that they want to use is 480v the voltage is available but is this not in direct violation of 680.51(b). upon further inspection of the controller the installation instruction state that this unit will not be ul listed if used at 480. called the service tech he said these have been hooked up this way all over the country. how can this happen or am i missing something. one more thing the pump and light cables are just dropped in the water from the shore to the fountian do thse not have to be in conduit up untill the last ten feet

Re: 480v fountian

The 2002 NEC 680 does not cover man made bodies of water. My best advice would be to use the 2005 as a guideline since it has a new section for this application and check with the AHJ to be sure everyone is on the same page. You will find a lot of the 2002 requirements do not apply.

Re: 480v fountian

Actually this is an aerator and it's main purpose is to keep oxygen levels in the water at a safe level for the fish. I have installed a few of these and I try to think safety with these. I set a 120/240 volt 100 amp R-3 service 2' above the flood level All the ones I have seen were 240 volt pumps and 120 volt lighting. I GFCI anything that goes into the water or most of the time they come with a control panel that has the GFCI breakers already in them. They should have extra hard use 600 volt STW or STOW cord on them. Are these pumps 3-phase?

The only thing that I see in 682 of the "2005" That I didn't do is install a equipotential plane adjacent to the service equipment. For step and touch potential. The "2005" requires it to be 36" around the equipment. I think I would install it at least 5' around it as anyone can reach 36"

Re: 480v fountian

this is a 3 phase pump 480 volt the lighting is 120 volt the control panel has gfi protection for both the pump and the lights how do you determine if it is a fountain or not basically i feel since this has lights around it and is used to enhance this area it should probably be considered a fountain

Re: 480v fountian

If this pumps listing is only good for something less than 480 volts and you proceed to tie into a 480 volt feed, I'd red tag it until you can get a testing lab to confirm it is safe. No listing, no final approval.

If it's a submersible pump it's a violation and must come out.
