do these 60 gal 5hp single stage air compressors that home depot
and others sell require a starter or can you just feed the pressure sw
it's tp'd and the panel is 25 ft away on the opposite wall

Take a close look at the motor nameplate. Many of those 5 hp Air Compressors are giving you the locked rotor hp or some other number to sell the AC. If it has a 120V 15 A plug then it can't be a 5 hp motor, if you look in NEC table 430.248 full load current for single phase motors, its 56 amps.
Its most likely a 1/2 hp or 3/4 hp motor.

My Craftsman compressor is rated at 5.5 HP, yet has a 15 amp plug. When I pulled the cover off and looked at the motor nameplate it said HP_____. Yup, blank. It did however say AMPS _15_. I looked in 430.248 and found that at 120 volts this was about a 1 HP motor. Talk about false advertising. I think that Sears may have caught on however. Someone told me that they no longer put false HP rating on their compressors.

The 60 gal Home Depot air compressors mentioned in the OP do not come with a cord and attachment plug as do the smaller portable units.

Does anyone know if it is it the manufacturers intention that these 60 gal compressors NOT be cord connected?

It may be true 5 hp AC. 400.7 allows equipment to cord connected to facilitate frequent interchange. Since the AC is going to be bolted down, it would typically not use a cord and cord connector.

HP

I own a sears rad arm saw and a 30 gal compressor w/cord. in both cases when i read the label or literature is says 'developes ____hp'. which is certainly IMHO larger than actual size of the motor. :-?
