5 HP Planer

So client has a
5HP planer
compressor that says 3.7 hp on front of it ? name plate does not show HP just says SPL
and a 3hp table saw
All are 240 volt
sized 5hp at 27FLC x1.25 =35 could of used #10 THHN used #8 Long run. Breaker at 250% FLC. I think I got it so far did ,same to other.
Pulled them to there locations.

Here my situation I ran into because I overlooked something. The table saw came with preinstalled cord straight from factory its a 6-15p. Just looked in my book real quick and realized is spaced that the outlet needs to have a HP rating. Find out the factory 6-15p is only good for 1.5 HP and the L6-30p I got are only for 2HP
Look like I need L8-30 and a L7-30 Instead.
What should I do about the Factory cord. Also.
Also looks like 210.21.b 1 limits the receptical to 30 amps. Does that 5hp planner really use that it was just a label on the whole unit I could not get to the actual motor to look at it.

The tell here is "SPL". Translation is it is a custom motor that is part of the machine. The "HP" designation on the machine is a meaningless mythical number. In other words these are not NEMA HP numbers that you would use and apply Article 430. Treat it like an appliance and provide a branch circuit per the instructions and receps to match their cord.

Power tools and compressors have notoriously inflated HP numbers. Usually, there is a FLA on the motor nameplate. I'd do what you can to make those visible and go by that. These may be listed as appliances and not motors, so NEC 430 isn't really the place to look. You'll overkill it doing that.

I would expect the saw, compressor, and planer to all be similar in nameplate value -- somewhere around 15 to 20 amps at 240V.

I tried to get to the Motors but to look at the Actual HP. The homeowners has them on some rolling cart. Only way to get to the motor is to have a crane lift them off lol. The instructions Say nothing. Probably call the manufacture. I was worried the Nema L6-30 would burn up but sound like your saying the HP is just for advertisement. Since instruction say nothing would you just go by the FLC and size the Receptacle off that.

Install a 6-15R and leave the cord alone- if it comes from the mfg that way, it's probably OK.

"have notoriously inflated HP numbers"- like the consumer vacuum cleaners that say "12 AMPS POWERFUL!!" (and have a 16g cord).

Getting to the motors would likely not have helped you anyway. The nameplate on my “3 HP” planer is the only thing on it - nothing else on the motor.
