I think the 10 Ft distance is for qualified personel working on equipment in section 1910.269, the 25 ft is for unqualified personel. From the sounds of it the OP is working on equipment described in 269 but is unqualified based on the fact that the OP had to ask the question in the first place.[/QUOTE]

I addressed that already in post 12 and 17. Before I even started this thread I knew that the minimum distance was around eleven feet~ but like I have already stated I am not a lineman and since I don't work around 500kv everyday I certainly cannot know exactly what is and isn't safe without doing a little research.

Marc,
Yes the lights are equipment, but they are not generation, control, transformation, transmission or distribution equipment. In my opinion the lights do not fall under that standard.

I don't know if this will make you feel any better , but that 500kv is a phase to phase voltage . Phase to ground will be in the neighborhood of 289 kv .

Oh ok MD, I was thinking that something was amiss here..with there being such a huge gap between TVA and Osha safety procedures....

Luke,
I worked with the guy that wrote many of the line procedures at TVA for a couple of years. If OSHA is more conservative than TVA, it's because OSHA changed since he retired (about 5 years ago.)

You can also thank him (and partly me, I interned at TVA in Chattanooga) for TVA's arc flash procedure.

Well then, I will have to say thanks for your time WDeanN. Your time and efforts with TVA help keep me and other electricians out there safe.

Best regards to you Sir.
