50A breaker for a spa

Where in the NEC does it require a GFI breaker for a 50A 220V service to an outdoor spa installed in a single family dwelling?

680.44 Protection. applies. If you call it a combination pool/hot tub or spa it does not require GFCI protection. I never realized that the name changed the degree of safety. How come a plain old hot tub needs protection?
