I'm feeding a 100A main breaker panel from another panel using a 50A breaker. I plan to size the cable based on the source breaker (50A in this case), but I thought there was something in the code that may prohibit this?

Not a problem. Your would not even need a main breaker.

I must be getting confused with another section of the code. For a second I thought that I could do it with the 50A breaker, but would need to run #2 cable. Isn't there something in the code restricting size of cable landing on a breaker? I was thinking I could feed it with the 50A breaker, but would need to size the cable based on 100A..........

Thanks for the response.

nope. there is some chance that the lugs on the 100 A breaker might not accept a really small conductor but you can deal with that issue in other ways.

as long as the conductor and panelboard bus is protected properly you are OK.

230.71 If the 100 amp panel has more than 6 switches (single or double pole) i.e. breakers, then it needs a main. If equal or less then 6 pole spaces, then no main. Of course, one could install tandem (twins), then non compliant....;)

So, "it depends".

You're talking about services, the OP is talking about a subpanel.
