Is it stated in the code that when you install a 2X4 ,lay in, fluorescent luminaire that you must have a junction box no more than 6' away to limit the fixture whip to 6'? I can remember doing a job where we installed 40, 2X4, lay in fluorescents and the lead man wanted a 1900 box within 6' of every fixture as he said "that was code". I looked in the code and cant find anything that states that. Thanks.

Re: 6' fixture whips

As long as the whips are no longer than 6' that should sufice you are limited by the ampacity of the branch circuit and fill requirements of the 1900 box. The 1900 box at each light might be overkill however there maybe a reason ( although I can't think of one) for this requirement. Also keep in mind that it is ultimately your lead mans responsibility for time, material, workmanship, among other things. I would follow his instruction but would question it RESPECTFULLY and then do what ever he says. It maybe a costumer request that has already been worked into the bid. Who knows.

Look at:
348.30(A) Exception #3 (assuming your are using FMC)
and
410.67(C)

If you are using full sized branch circuit conductors in these whips and supporting them according to 348.30(A) there isn't a maximum length.
