# 6 ground wire has to be green, not taped.

That's why they allow exposed cables and unfused service entrance conductors in a house.

Well the NEC says the disconnecting means will be nearest the point of entrance, any further then that is the AHJ not the NEC.

If someone could offer an explanation why the taping thing is unsafe, I'm all ears.

Truthfully I don't think it is, but it is the rule and rules came about from people submitting proposals and them being accepted.

For all we the original proposal may have wanted all EGCs to be green and letting us use tape for larger conductors was already a trade off.

Just use black. Tell the inspector it's green. Very, very dark dreen.

isn't black the absorption of all colors?,..... see black can be any color you want it to be ,..just got to stare really really hard it

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "exposed cables." Regardless, we have lots of exposed cables of every kind around here, and they aren't causing any problems, so in that sense they are very safe.

I was thinking of something like this. Permitted by the NEC but not the safest thing IMO. Personally I am one of THOSE guys who think cable should be protected by being in the wall or in conduit.

You are certainly entitled to that opinion. :)

That said, I don't think there is any basis for it. I know it's all in what you're used to, and as we mostly use cable methods around here, I can assure you there is nothing unsafe about them, even when run exposed.

I will do it as long as your paying for it. :)

BTW, the photo could not have been a better example.

I can see some kid hacking away at them with his pirate sword or something.

I can see a painter leaning his ladder against them.

I can see a dog or rat chewing on them.

Plastic swords? I'm not worried. ;)

If rodents are a problem, then MC is a good choice.

Most painters here know that they shouldn't be leaning ladders against wires.

This will just have to be something that we will have to agree to disagree on. While the things you mentioned are valid concerns, we really don't get too caught up with the "what if's" when we do things the way we do here.

It is never my intention to change the way other people do their work or how they think.

I just like to have some things like this to show that I exceed the code as much as I ignore it with my plastic bushings and taped wires :)

So, what does green represent on conductors?

Oxidation, envy of another conductor, mold, inexperience, or sea sick, to name a few things. :D
