Besoeker:

But I am interested in seeing whether I can see 50 Hz buried in the mud (in a signal sense) either as a magnetic field, or as a conducted current in the earth.

My attempt would be with a correlation detector and a long integrating time constant. I doubt I will see anything. I expect background noise to be too high.

.

A simple cable hound works just fine. No need for math and whatnot. You can plug the probe into any type of test equipment you want to.

I don’t remember that one....unfortunately that’s not the only thing I don’t remember. According to what people tell me, I’ve forgotten plenty!

Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XFYMjkFYPg

It's far from historically accurate. For starters, the Titanic was a British ship (not USS) and its fateful maiden voyage was to be from England to New York City, not the other way around. Also, the story told by the song is set in 1913, but the Titanic sank in 1912, and there is no evidence that the captain and first mate were smoking hemp rope when the ship hit the iceberg.

Other than that it's a great rollicking talking blues song; it was an "underground" radio hit.

They wouldn't let Jack Johnson on board
They say this ship don't haul no coal
Fare thee well, Titanic, fare thee well...
