I have installed a 90 amp breaker, feeder and 100 amp disconnect switch to a hydraulic elevator pump, per engineered drawings. The elevator installer informs me that his unit requires 50 amp fuses. The elevator inspector will not allow a fuse reducer to be installed.

If I change the disconnect switch to 60 amp, is it OK to be connected to the 90 amp feeder?

If not please let me know the code section.

Thanks for the info

Randy,
Assuming that the feeder is protected by the 90 amp breaker and that the line side terminals in the 60 amp disconnect are rated for the size of wires that you used for the feeder their is no problem.

You could use the ten foot tap rule to reduce the size of the conductors on the line side of the 60 amp disconnect.... may need a gutter or j-box above the disconnect for the taps.

Jerm,
In our area the inspectors figure that if you use a fuse reducer and the fuse were to blow, someone might replace it with a fuse that would be way larger than required.
Sounds crazy because the person who would do that is surely not qualified to be repairing an elevator.
