I cant find any thing baring it from being next to the pool.

680.6(2) It would have to be grounded. :roll: I know I didn't have to tell anyone that

680.26(B)(5) If it's within 5ft of the pool it has to be bonded to the common bonding grid.

Not a trick question. Owner of an existing home has central A/C. The condenser is located at the back of the house. He wants to install a underground swimming pool. He wants to know how close that he can place the pool to the existing condenser. I can't find anything in article 680 that addresses this situation.

well,,,,,,,,,hmmmmmm, i read, reread had the 2 dogs read, the wife read,,,,,,nothing as u stated/period,,,something that needs to be addressed in the nec.....i do know the closer he gets the pool to the unit am assuming that they will need to gfi and do all the bonding thats required with any of the pool items.. maybe a call to the pool people! best of luck :roll: my thought on this! if he can afford an inground pool, he can afford the cost of relocation of the ac unit...

What a coincidence,On Friday I had a house tagged on a final.Senario a screen enclosure behind the house.A/C compressor inside the enclosure(why can`t be on the side no clearance due to building codes)and then contractor had pool equiptment at the back of the enclosure also inside why I don`t care,but the inspector tagged it for being within enclosure and to close.I spoke to the chief and he says as long as the equiptment isn`t within 5 ft. of pools edge its fine..... All measurements condensor,pool pump.disconnects are all between 5 ft.2 in. and 5 ft.9 in.I have a problem with this but inspector doesn`t :confused: But who am I to argue,any thoughts after all this is why we are here......Allen

5 Feet. Measured from the edge of the water line to the nearest point of the electrical device, equipment, fixture etc., etc. It is true that "other electrical" equipment is not specified in the code, but every inspector I've ever dealt with uses that "5 ft. rule" as the guideline. I believe the Uniform Building Code may cover this also.

If the inspector can't come up with a code article from some source, then he's just making up as he goes.

The requirment is all electrical equipment located within 1.5 m (5 ft) of the inside wall of the specified body of water.

This means the mesurement is from the equipment to over the side to the inside wall. not just to the outside of the pool at the water line edge.

Sounds like one @&$#* place to have it but if 5 ft then i dont know why he taged it.Who wants to hear that noise while relaxing in the pool ?

Jim watch your language the F.c.c. has issues here recently.As a footnote I got the tag pulled since all equiptment is over 5 ft. from waters edge but the inspector asked to bond the compressor as a favor he would feel better about it.6 ft. of #8,2 mechanical lugs and a few screws I made a friend.......................Allen

I agree with you as to how you handled the 'favor' asked by the inspector. If an inspector asks for a small favor such as in your case, by all means okay. It is when the say it has to be done ... well I then will say no.

Pierre,I look at it the same way.Just because the inspector says do it doesn`t mean squat to me.But,if asked to do something just to make them feel better about the installation I will consider it and usually will comply.As a foot note
this same inspector has let me slide with a receptacle 3 ft. 1 in. from a bathroom sink ;)
