There isn't any code rule in the NEC however the local gas company (natural gas) around here requires 3' from the meter. No rules anywhere else that I know.

The general rule comes from NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code:
Section 5.7.2.3 Gas meters shall be located at least 3 ft (0.9 m) from sources of ignition.
Note the restriction is created by the meter, not the piping. Closed piping systems, downstream of the gas meter, especially at the pressures common to residential installations are not an electrical area classification a problem.

There are a few specific electrical restrictions in NFPA 54, Sections 7.13 to 15 but they generally are already covered in the NEC. The only one that I believe is unique is a general prohibition to use gas piping as a circuit conductor unless it is part of “… (50 V or less) control circuits, ignition circuits, [or] electronic flame detection device circuits…” Oddly enough, the exception isn’t limited to circuits associated with the piping.
