a/c disconnect

Does the a/c disconnect have to meet the 30" width clearance space requirement?

Article 110.26 and the definition for equipment would indicate it does.

I am not looking for an argument, just looking for some NEC justification why it would NOT need to meet this requirement.

Re: a/c disconnect

It is almost impossible in some cases like in attics with head room very low.I say NO since there is a way to work on it while its dead by turning off the breaker.

Re: a/c disconnect

Thanks, Jim, for your response. However, I am still searching for some solid code-compliant justification.

The article says "LIKELY to require adjustment, servicing, or maintenance while engerized...."

Since the disconnect is likely to be serviced or adjusted (whether fusible or nonfusible the likely response is simply to walk up and pull the disconnect) while the circuit is energized, the article would apply.

I am looking for somewhere in the code book which would show me why it should NOT apply.

"Never done it that way before" is the only answer I have received.

Re: a/c disconnect

The reason it is written that way in the code is because there is nothing (and you can't even dream up anything) that would require it be worked on while energized, as long as there is a disconnect upstream. We have to live with the way it is written, unless the code making panel will approve your version of what it should say.
