If someone can show me how a hermetic refrigeration unit with electric heater attachment is economical..feel Free to educate me other wise the math is correct and so is the electric bill..Here that unit is promoted by the utility company and you are suppose to receive a reduced rate on your electric bill..everyone I know are some what dissatisfied..the bills are high and so is the maintenance costs..

It's hard to believe that heat pumps are promoted in MN. I did hear that there is a new unit that is efficient down to around 32 degrees but the old ones were a loser at around 40 degrees.

In many southern states a heat pump is all you need. It doesn't get that cold or stay cold for very long so a heat pump is very efficient. But you would starve to death trying to sale snowmobiles.

LOL that was good and they promote and sell heat pumps here..that is why I have my attitude toward them..I believe they should not be installed in location where it gets below 20 degrees..

High energy bills are invading friends house. Went over and checked panel, all connections clean. No new appliances added.

Winter has arrived (location is north of Las vegas,NV) so took readings on heat pump. Reading about 36 amps on a 4 ton unit (think it's a 4 ton) and that is what the info on the side of the unit indices as running amps. Does this seem about normal?

Bill is $300+ or so a month at new rate. Has been about$125 to 150. Is this just sticker shock for an area that is about 50 degree days, and 27 degree nights? The cost per Kw is 12 cents.

Check the power consumption and get degree/day data from meteoroligical sites. Then compare it to previous data. Fuel pumps have real problems with efficiency when they operate around the breakeven point between heating and cooling.

With the power deregulation and changing fuel surcharges the bill can be very misleading.

cschmid,

So what type of heating system do you have that only cost $1000 a year

in a place that gets so cold ? And how many sq. ft. are we talking.

I live out of my service truck that takes 3. per gallon to heat  :D ..But the house I sleep in is only 1400 Sq ft..nothing special high efficiency gas furnace and fan forced off peak electric..2bdrm 1 bath and everything else is great room..I also have a partial basement..two garages and storage buildings..cattle and other farm animals..get too big of house when you get older kids and grandkids dont want to leave..

Well it was an interesting little venture ... Only house I've seen in the area that didn't come with Heat Strips (almost like someone "forgot" to install them during intial install)! Seeings the purchase is less than a year old (house is probably less than three years old), going back after the seller/HVAC installation company/warrantee.

Changed Stat.

Compressor By-pass valve is bleeding off at upper end. So looking for resolution from seller.

If that fails, Add heat strips, and change compressor.

Thanks everybody for all the great input!

Tough being from Alaska and just "looked" at a couple of A/C units...ain't anything like a furnace...

Y'all got my curiosity up, so I added up my electric bills for the year. I have total electric, heat pump, 2,200 square foot. The years total is $1158.56. I live in SC and the price per KWH is around 9 cents. It was an extremely hot summer so it is normally much less per year. August was a whopping $123.67! I keep it 72 winter and summer. :)

I have wired houses like that too..I am  (happy) because I am not slave to massive house that takes all my extra bling..I like trading my 4 wheelers off every other year and trading my cars off every other year..I like going out to eat than a movie and not having it break the budget.. :D

Oh yea it could be nice having all that extra bling but then everyone else wants some of it as well..
