A/C service outlet

first of all, i'm not greedy, there is plenty of money to be made without adding a receptacle for every silly piece of equipment. And if HVAC guys are dumb enough to "rig" 120v from the 240, go ahead. I'm pretty sure the shuttle launch will go on without them. It just gets more complicated and tedious with every code change, pretty soon no one will be able to answer a single electrical question correctly. Hmmmm maybe I need a drink....

PS I love being an electrician :)

Service plugs

I really do know where your coming from, but the fact of the matter is, its just another chance to make more money, bottom line.

Ya sure?
Maybe one the HVAC guys who buys the farm won't have that kid that sits in the driver's seat of the shuttle.

On occasion I've used one to plug in a light when testing the unit in the dark. But as Celtic pointed out if you already have one within 25' on the same level you do not need to add a receptacle when you install the AC unit.

This, posted by Praedatus1, really ticks me off. Yes, I'm an HVAC servoice man that has tapped of the local disconnect hundreds of times for power since there wasn't any outlet nearby.

I need power for my Recovery machine, vacuum pump, electronic leak detector, micron meter and yes my battery chargers.

When you are by a fence in the yard and the recep is on the other side, you need to keep jumping the fence to plug/un-plug etc. It's a PITA.

I have 13 years of residential HVAC, 12 years of commerical building maintenance. I've had to throw a 250 foot spool of SO cord with a plug and body on the ends to get power on the roof before.

I'm all for the outlet.

Jim

RIGHT ON, JIM, I agree !!!!!

I can't even believe we are talking about it, you can tap this outlet of the closest circuit, it could not be easier to install how much effort are we talking about?

Try dealing with 25 roof units on a big store, each one needs a receptacle, where the home runs for these receptacles are often hundreds of feet of EMT. But it still makes sense because the HVAC guys will need the receptacles.

Why?
The units get spread out?

I have a picture someplace of a roof we did.....45 +/- RTUs....5 receptacles :D
The layout was "tight" to say the least!

Funny, I just failed a final for not having one of these within 25' and when I met up with the electrician he said he never heard of that and no other inspector ever made them do that. We are NEC2005 here. Sounds like the poster of this thread just found out for the first time too.

Swamp it

Swamp it

Maybe one of you guys can tell me the reason for an a/c service outlet on the outside of a residential home. Maybe someone can name a SINGLE tool or piece of equipment that needs to plug into a service plug, besides, of course, the dryer pump which is used ONCE.

Hmmmmm...I couldn't think of any either.
You could convince them to install a swamp cooler, and they wouldn't need that required outlet.

Well at least it forces people to add them on remodles on older homes. There is nothing more annoying than having to do work outside and having to run a cord from 50+feet away just to cut a pipe or piece of wood. Not to mention the radio.

So much for continuing education classes. :D

I always run a recept for the rooftop units that I wire, but most of the commercial buildings in my area I do service calls on dont have recepts on the roof at all, it really sucks to have to run extension cords up through a roof access hole.

I am speaking mostly about remodels. We do a ton of remodles and I hate having to fish a wire in for a service plug every time.

New construction, yeah no prob.

Go buy some 100 foot extension cords you sissies. You have to get out one for 25 feet anyways. Whats next, water heater service plugs? Service plug service plugs? Meter base service plugs? Transformer service plugs???? EH? DO I NEED TO GO ON?

A 28 year old HVAC tech was electrocuted this past year in my neighborhood while servicing an outdoor condenser unit, his wife and two young children may disagree.
