Here in CA you take your two day course or whatever it is and you are now a home inspector. So you could have a retired sparky inspecting your structural which in just a dangerous as the other way around in my mind.

A good home inspector will never "require" anything, simply suggest.

And be very cautious if he hands you a business card for a guy that can do the work for you.

To be fair, the context for this is the law describing the requirements to be an electrical inspector.

If this snippet were stand alone law, then the inspector who does plumbing inspections, etc., would need electrical licences.

Home inspectors are a force unto themselves.
 
Very true AL this is a law covering electrical inspectors..But if a Home inspector says you have improper wiring than he just did an electrical inspection..If he says your bathroom drain is improper he just did a plumbing inspection..to me that makes him an illegal inspector..our state is specific on the requirements for both types of inspection..Just so you know I think Home inspectors should be either regulated more or put out of business..they make recommendations that affect the home owners bottom line and are not qualified to do so..I have pointed out the qualifications for electrical inspection of any type in this state and the plumbing, building and boiler inspectors have just as stringent requirements in this state..Why should some unqualified person be able to carry more authority then the real deal..

you are mistaking two separate roles. the electrical inspector as referred to in this law, is a guy who inspects electrical installations under the authority of the AHJ to ensure compliance with the electrical code.

the home inspector is not doing electrical inspection in that context.

you are trying to do amateur legal work.
 
okay I might of stepped over that line and am not trying to do legal work but it has the appearance of that..So you think it is right for a non qualified person to come into your house and say that the panel in your house is unsafe and needs to be changed..now you have a written legal document by a non qualified person stating your panel needs to be changed..now this document is viewed by many other people who are also unqualified thinking this is the gospel and now you are required to change the panel to a suitable panel and spend a grand doing it or negotiate the price off you house so the next owner can afford to do it..You don't think there is anything wrong with that picture..I must be just old fashion but where I come from we find that wrong..If your house is so bad that you need to have an inspection on it then hire the professional to inspect it so you can have a knowledgeable assessment done..Home inspectors can obtain a certification in less than forty hours worth of study..check it out on-line and see..I just can not buy into the whole concept..I had a perspective buyer want a inspection done..my reply was what did you think was wrong?? I will have a certified technician check it out..all he wanted was to have a guy come out so he could get a report so he could have a better leverage to negotiate the price..no home inspector going to pull a BS inspection on my house so someone can rip me off..I know all the inspectors and can get a real inspection..


LMAO this thread has gone from what a grand fathered rule is to a discussion on whether home inspectors should have any authority in inspections...

Not to distract here, I just thought it was interesting that in 86 posts, only two people have posted more than 4 times. That is a very diverse conversation.

When dealing with the conformity or nonconformity of existing work, the NEC goes out the window in my state. The International Existing Building Code and The International Property Maintenance Code are the documents that prevail in those instances.

We're all about the diversity around here. ;)

At our company some journeymen like to randomly cite the grandfather rule whenever it suits their needs, if it exists or doesn't is of no consequence...

That's my 2c,
