I have a question regarding the use of Photoelectric smoke detectors in a dwelling unit. I was told that a Photoelectric smoke detector should be installed within ten feet from the kitchen stove. Is that true? NFPA 72 describes two types of photoelectric detectors. Photoelectric light obstruction smoke detectors and Photoelectric light-scattering smoke detectors. Which type should I use in the kitchen area? Is it required to use Photoelectric smoke detectors in any other location in a dwelling unit? I'm still looking for the answer in the NFPA 72 text. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and effort.

Perhaps you are refering to 11.8.3.5(4) of the NFPA 72?

(4) Smoke Alarms and Smoke Detectors installed within a 20-ft horizontal path of a cooking appliance shall be equipped with an alarm-silencing means or be of the photoelectric type.

Justin, I think it should be stated at least 10 feet away from the stove. By what I have learned, they should be at least 15 feet from the heat. Photoelectric are good to put in damp locations like in a hot tub room, maybe near a bathroom where there's alot of moisture. They say it's also good to have one in the living room. Ionization sensors should be OK in the other areas were smoke alarms are needed. They now make Dual sensors that are both Photoelectric/Ionization. Alittle more in price but they are the best to have I think.Hope this might help.
Bye now,

Justin, I forgot to tell you that Photoelectric sensors are required near the kicthen area. bphgravity was correct but I forgot to write it in on my earlier anwser.

I'm not familiar with the building code that requires smoke detectors near a kitchen.
There are codes that require a smoke detector on each floor, but not near a kitchen, due to false alarms.
