Good evening y'all,
A quick question if you have the time...
I'm currently working on an office remodel, and arhcitects are calling for the abandoning of existing devices and concealed type NM, which will be hidden behind furniture(cubes). I am aware of rules concerning abandoned fire alarm cable, but is there something in the NEC prohibiting us from leaving existing wiring and devices?
Thanks in advance,
Charles

Re: Abandoned Devices

From what you've described the devices and wiring can remain. Furniture cubes aren't part of the building structure or finish so the devices can remain.

Re: Abandoned Devices

I would probably remove the covered devices, join the wires with w-nuts, and install blank plates, just as a matter of practice. I'd rather block a junction box than a device.

p.s whats a cube?
A cube is that which the cubicle dwellers work in.

In NYC we play a game called "prarie doggin'" before exiting on an office floor, make a wager with your partner how many cubicle dwellers will "pop up" to look when you make a loud or unusual sound. On some floors there are over 100 cubicles within your sight line so you gotta count fast!

Re: Abandoned Devices

Could someone point me to the code section that requires removal of Power Limited circuits. I scanned 725 and could not find it.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Abandoned Devices

Busman "My book is not handy" I don't think removal is mentioned. Try Article 760 05" NEC. I may be wrong.

Re: Abandoned Devices

"Good grief I must be blind". Found it! I don't get back in those articles too often Thanks Ryan.

That sounds like fun. I'll remember that next time I have an inspection on an occupied floor. I bet a loose bundle of EMT works great.

Re: Abandoned Devices

Just make the lights blink and you will be all of them will pop their heads out of the holes. Some smart ones will tell you that you killed their computer. Heaven help you have a ballast smoke. Some will even complain and get to go home because the smell is bad. They will even be paid for it and it will not count against their sick time.
