Hi All, I have been reading through threads from many varied topics. One thing I notice is the vast abbreviations used. I've searched the archives and haven't found a listing for them. Some I've deciphered some have left me smh.\ ;) If you who read this would be so kind to comment with a list of the abbreviations mcu (most commonly used) I think it would be helpful to many who visit this site. Thanks and MC (Merry Christmas)

You could start by listing the ones you think should be explained. For people that are familiar with them, it's hard to know which ones to start with.

I took this one from a post I was reading this morning.
"I found a similarly miswired panel in a 4-panel PDU w/xfmr. The electrician who wired it knew better, but was distracted or tunnel-visioned. He later admitted to it, but never explained why (to me, anyway).

Technically, it was a violation. The SDS originated in the same enclosure and the SBJ termination is inches away, but the EGC's and neutrals were swapped around to make it right. "

What is PDU and SDS?

There was a list of acronyms running around here some time ago.
I can't find it.
Anyone know how to do a better search than I'm coming up with?

SDS = Skills Development Scotland..............:D

Slightly more seriously PDU may be Power Distributiion Unit.

List in one of the FAQ pages

Note these are acronyms that mostly relate to this or other similar forums, there is a much larger number of general use acronyms out there.

I also see that was posted about 10 years ago, possibly time to review and update/replace it?

But do you see any of those abbreviations used ion the NEC? I don't.

What I don't know is "SBJ"... well, at least as it might relate to our industry anyway...

Maybe it was supposed to be SJB for Sub Junction Box?

My favorite abbreviation was learned in an 11th-grade science class. The teacher returned a graded test paper to me that had an unfamiliar notation in several places. I was familiar with the abbreviation "DNA" for deoxyribonucleic acid from my Biology classes, but was stumped as to why this Earth Science teacher wrote "DNA" and took points off for several of my answers.

Thanks, Mr. Paul, you certainly were clever. I've always remembered that DNA stands for "Do Not Abbreviate". I can only imagine how you'd feel about today's abbreviation-filled writing.

TLA's and FLA's:

Three letter acronyms and four letter acronyms.
I was always taught to use the Method Of Abbreviation (MOA).
Where you write it out in full and define the abbreviation at the same time the first time the term is used.
