Two part question:
wiring fire rated wall, steel studs, 5/8 firco sheet rock on inside walls, green board and siding on outside wall.
Inspector says to use ac cable. Is it required to use the grommets for horizontal runs through studs?
Other than running conduits for the subpanel feed what would be allowed to be ran in this wall for the sub feeder?

Re: ac cable

Ceb, the answer to the first part is NO. Notice 300.4 (B)(1) only pertains to NM

The answer to the second part, use an AC large enough for the feeder.

Re: ac cable

Flex (FMC) for a feeder would be easy to slip through metal stud. Larger flex sizes might be easier to find than heavy AC...

Re: ac cable

Pierre, yes NM can be installed in rated walls.

Re: ac cable

I am running NM this week in a 3 unit office.Nothing wrong with it being in the common fire wall.Unless i missed the point the reason to the fire wall is to give firefighters some extra time.Ruling might be over ,class of building.

Re: ac cable

Yes, this is a special fire rated wall due to the owner expanding his business one foot from his property line. This job also calls for me upgrading his 200amp service to 400amp and changing over old sub panels to 4 wire. I have already talked to inspector and he will be glad to work with me on all this change over with out the business going completely down for days. So he wants ac in this wall he is going to get ac with a smile on my face and no argument.

Re: ac cable

Pierre, You're welcome and I meant to come back to this thread with an example.

If you go Here you can see an example of this.

The assembly is for the through penetration, but you can see the NM is run within the rated wall.
