Any cool sources on the history of the NEC ? For example, I would want to be able to ask, "what Code version did working clearances become code". etc...

Here is a great site:
http://antiquesockets.com/nec.html
Lots of pre '20s NEC books, some earlier (pre-NEC) codes too.

A few of us collect older books too. I like seeing the changes over time and am usually happy to track a particular code section or idea.

I am constantly amazed at how far back modern requirements actually go:
1937: Section 3712. Repairing Plaster. Except on walls or ceilings of concrete, tile, or other non-combustible material, a plaster surface which is broken or incomplete shall be repaired so that there will be no gaps or open spaces at the edge of the box or fitting.

Edit: I see that that link was provided while typing. Good site.

Currently, I know of no site that would allow you to do that. About the only way to do what you want to do is find the old books and start searching.

Biggest problem is the numbering systems used. It's been changed about 4 times, so tracing a rule back can be tricky. Especially when entire articles get moved en masse.

I've heard rumors, however, that the NFPA is working on digitizing all the past editions and allowing you to start with a current article, and trace it's history back through the ages.

That is quite an offer!

Any knowledge of what NEC revision the following was first introduced?

from 2008...
500.7(K) Combustible Gas Detection System. A combustible gas detection system shall be permitted as a means of protection in industrial establishments with restricted public access and where the conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified persons service the installation. Where such a system is installed, equipment specified in ...(2), ... shall be permitted.

(2) Interior of a Building. In a building located in, or with an opening into, a Class I, Division 2 location where the interior does not contain a source of flammable gas or vapor, electrical equipment for unclassified locations shall be permitted. Combustible gas detection equipment shall be listed for Class I, Division 1 or Class I, Division 2, for the appropriate material group, and for the detection of the specific gas or vapor to be encountered.
