Viewing what is on your machine

Besides all the Excellent advice, I just want to add one more, and I beleive I've seen the following posted here before.

Seeing that your toying with your CPU. I thought that you and others might enjoy some free software that looks at your CPU.

www.Belarc.com is this profiling software, this will list A-Z all aspects of your CPU in one Bland, hardware, software, and lists well basically everything.

Note, ? Free Download? across the top of home page. go there and download, OR read all the FAQ's about the software one might download.

Enjoy

Another thing to consider is replacing the whole computer. If you have 256mb of RAM chances are that other components are going to slow your computer down.

Since we are talking computers, who has the oldest?

Athlon 1400 CPU (266 FSB).
(2) 128meg sticks of ram (PC 133).
(1) 10 Gig 5400 hard drive (C).
(1) 20 Gig 7200 hard drive (D), store my data here.
On board sound.
GTS-pro Video card (really old, lol).
MSI K7T Turbo-2 MB.
A "Packard Bell" keyboard from the mid 1990's.
Cheap pair ($20) of speakers.
A new DVD/CD burner (my old CD burner went out).
Old KDS 19" CRT monitor.
Windows 2K Pro

I thought about upgrading the Video card and the RAM, but I figure it would be money better spent to just by a new PC.

I gave the computer guy the make, model, and processor over the phone. I also matched the requirements of the computer to the burner before I bought it.

256 is the min ram requirement. Computer guy says I'm fine as is. When I told him I always have a couple windows open and the DSL blazing, he said a ram upgrade wouldn't hurt.

If anyone thinks they could use this DDR2 card, PM me as I had to almost destroy the package to get it out. I know office big box will laugh me out of the store if I try to return it.

my first computer was an IBM/Compatible PC/TurboXT that ran at 8 and 10 MHZ alternatively (depending on the button) It came with:

DOS 2.1

640 K of RAM (thats K NOT M) with option to upgrade to 1024k (thats ONE megabyte)

one 5 1/4 360k floppy drive

orange monochrome monitor

keyboard

9 pin epson printer

Our first upgrade was a surplus 10 megabyte hard drive from the power plant Dad worked at... we thought we would never fill it up

Has no one mentioned that many machines need matched RAM in terms of 2 1G, or 2 512's, or 4 256's. Or just one by itself - i.e. one 512, etc. Or that is at least my non-geek understanding of it>?>?>?>?

I believe the term is "Geek" :)
My wife calls this my "Geek forum"! This same woman spent the entire weekend with her computer in pieces all around her and got it back together and running again so I'm pretty sure I know who the real geek in our family is. I offered to let her use one of my hammers (a very manly tool) and she just gave me a dirty look. I guess my point is that while she may be a bit geeky I am certain that none of us on this forum are.

Yes this is definitely a point to consider when upgrading your RAM. Also the comment made about updating the bios to take advantage of the new
RAM. I learned this the hard way with Dell. A07 Bios revision only reads 3.25 gigs of RAM not 4. Gigs.
Another key basic is that you want to make damn sure you DISCHARGE STATIC ELECTRICITY BEFORE INSTALLING, otherwise you could be in predicament.
Here is a link for you to check out: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial122.html

Using matched sticks of RAM depends on the computer. As far as ESD I've had good luck with setting the RAM on its electro baggy on the metal frame of the puter. Then with one hand or forearm touching the frame installing the RAM. Make sure your skin is touching the computer frame before touching the RAM.

HARDWORKINGSTIFF

as I remember, I only needed a memory manager once i got past 640k, which was when we upgraded to the (bitchin) 16/20 MHZ 80286 board that came with 1024K ram...

EMM386 would let you have that extra 36k ram as a ram drive which would run REALLY fast!! WOOOHOOO a WHOLE 386K to use as a RAM DRIVE.... thats like.... ONE 360K floppy....

completely pointless memory untill Wolfenstein 3D came out...
