when doing an addition on a 1 family in n.j. where would you install the smoke alarm? would it be on a seperate circuit or can you put it on the recept circuit or light? the addition is for a family room

Check your local building / existing building codes. It will detail requirements for smoke alarms when installed in alterations, additions and remodels.

I'm with Bryan. Check with your building official. In New York state, we used to have to have SD's on a lighting circuit ahead of any intervening wall switch. When we went with the International Family of Codes, the rules changed and smokes were required to be powered by commercial power and have battery back-up and there was no longer the requirement for the lighting circuit. :)

A family room most likely wouldn't require a smoke alarm. As Celtic asked, does the place already have interconnected smokes?
