I never found the use for a 1/2" mudring on a drywall job. 5/8" rings fit perfect for 1/2" drywall, and 3/4" rings work out perfect 5/8" drywall.
I guess most people dont realize that the measurement is the overall measurement including the thickness of the ring.

It's also because the actual dimension of the ring doesn't take into account the thickness of the 8-32" screw holding it to the box. So a 3/4" ring fits perfectly in 5/8" sheetrock because the screw head is about 1/8 of an inch thick.

The screw head combined with the thickness of the ring metal.

Check it out without the screws some time. :)

I absolutely agree, plus even the heads of 8-32's that hold the ring to the box need a bit of room.

Added: I see I'm not the only one who agrees.

we have been using these on a condo project but in a pre fabricated assembly I was talking to the foreman and he was telling me that the assembly cost 5 dollars and some change for the adj. ring plus box plus decora recep wired with pig tails already on an 18" kick plate

you do the math - all rings came fully extended and there was a cover plate over the recep for protection to be removed after final wall coatings

it was a huge money saver with the no labor measuring just touch the kick plate to the floor and screw to stud
and just take ring off to wire
we also had our deck runs prefabed in the shop for smurf tube all circuits and deck boxes cut and wired to length

Work smart not hard :D

We use orange marking paint on the bottom plate and the floor to mark all box locations and take digital pictures of every single wall. This usually takes less than 30 minutes to do.
We walk the job right after the walls are skimmed then tell the contractor of all the boxes covered up. If we have to find them, (we know right where they are) the charge is $25.00 per box that we locate and cut out.

All of our trucks carry digital cameras and a picture is taken of all work completed, even service calls.
I do the same thing. Mark the floor and take pictures. It never ceases to amaze me how many boxes can get covered even in a small house.A digital picture is worth a thousand words and some times dollars too!
