Re: AFCI brakers on same buss bar

This occured in a main breaker panel,I checked that it was the correct circuit and correct wires, nothing was crossed just very confusing??
I emailed manufacturer and havent gotten a reply yet,Actually I hoped that someone had encountered this also

Re: AFCI brakers on same buss bar

From the discussion so far I understand that the 2 AFCI's were on the same bus at first. It would seem the the arc fault caused by the hot ground connection was large enough to caused the other breaker to trip. Similar to what happenes when a shared neutral exists on the circuit. When you seperated the breakers this condition no longer exists. I would be interested to hear what the manufacturer has to say about this condition.

Re: AFCI brakers on same buss bar

When the State of Florida done away with Journeyman licensing, about 1995, they left licensing requirements up to the individual counties. Most of these counties require a licensed Journeyman on each jobsite. With projects so large, how does one JW accept the responsibility of 200 "helpers?" What happened to the JW to helper ratio? you said that "Florida is one of the largest transient states," is this who does the work? No wonder i cannot afford to work at home any more!
By the way, I just happen to know where you can find a few hundred of these licensed WIREMEN!

Re: AFCI brakers on same buss bar

I haven't installed an AFCI yet, but I beleive that the neutral is connected to the breaker, like an GFI breaker, that detects the change voltage (arc) that may potentially cause a fire, and interrupt it... if there is a surge in current on the same bus, almost at the same connection point on the bar... would it be possible that the nearby breaker would have detected the surge of current travelling through the bus to the ground fault, and create an arc condition between the neutral and hot on the adjoining AFCI...just a thought...

Mike P..
I bet your right.
I had the same problem with a gfi breaker once.

Someone elses upgrade, I just tried to instal a GFI that kept tripping... Also same buss, opposit sides of the panel and Square D.

Later found, When the other circuit was off, it worked.

Found two different circuits with neutrals tied together at the end of the line.

Fixed that and it worked.

Re: AFCI brakers on same buss bar

OP Said: <snip>>>>neutrals are not tied together anywhere except on the neutral bar<<<<snip>

The neutrals should NOT be tied together at the neutral bar. The neutrals should remain separate and terminate in the neutral lug on the separate AFCI Breakers. The neutral PIGTAIL from each AFCI breaker should terminate (essentially be tied together) at the NEUTRAL BAR.

Or, am I misunderstanding your post?
