ok..... I have been told by someone that there are afci breakers that do not need separate nuetrals. does anyone know if this is true?? can 2 afci breakers be used on a 12/3...2 hots 1 nuetral?? i dont think this is true...any help would be appreciated.

Just like GFCIs you would need a two pole version.

A two pole AFCI will have a spot for the common neutral.

Typical single pole AFCIs can not be used with a common neutral.

Yep, CH makes common trip and independant trip AFCI's. I've used several. I pay 85 bucks for a 2 pole 20 amp indipendant trip.

I've been upselling AFCI's for the entire home on new work and service calls. It's a freaking easy sale with the right presentation. The 2 pole independant trip CH AFCI is the only way to protect a multiwire branch circuit.

GREAT...48 panels are CH and the service guy at my shop said as such... just had to be sure .......thanks. had me scared for a bit there

If you ran multi-wire branch circuits to bedrooms on new work, you should have your toenails yanked out. Even though these breakers exist, they are darned expensive. They are good for "mistakes" and for retro-fitting existing work. Somebody else is making them now too, but I forget who.

wasn't my fault...1st crew in did the rough. would rather the expense of the breaker than the man hours and wire cost to replace the 12/3
