It seems like a professional could find a way to accomplish both code compliance and safety.

Unfortunatly what the NEC/NFPA states and what the consumer generator maufacturers make do not jive. In most cases the only way to hook up a consumer generator with full NEC compliance and have it as safe as possible regardless of how it is used, would be to make it a SDS. This is of course possible, but three pole transfer switches in these sizes and price ranges are not readily available, not to mention the loading issues and cost of interupting the SE conductors. What is the supposed problem with a three wire feeder, N-G bonded at the generator, neutral not switched?


What your suggesting would be the same as removing overcurrent protection for a few hours a year.

I don't think that is a fair comparison.
