Could you feed a 4 ckt sub panel for a kitchen with a dual purpose AFCIGFCI instead of using individual breakers in the sub panel. My guess was you could but you would be more prone to nuisance trips killing entire kitchen.

Thanks in advance

Is there a dual function breaker large enough to handle the load?
Either way, it's a bad idea, IMO.

How would that work? There is no AFCI breaker, and not required for, over 20A. Each SABC is required as a 20A circuit.

I live in the industrial maintenance world. I ASSUMED there was a dual function 2 pull. It seemed like if it did exist there could be problems. I will look further to see if they do exist. This would be a 60 amp feed

You might get one larger breaker that will provide the GFCI function, but not for the AFCI function. Again code does not require under any current codes AFCI protection for anything above 20Amps so noone makes it.

Thanks Fred in a discussion the ability to use a 2 pull 60amp AFCIGFCIwas brought up. I incorrectly ASSUMED there was such a breaker. It just felt wrong but I had no good reason why not.

Me, personally, I would stay in the industrial/commercial world. I liked it so much better than residential. Installing and inspecting.
Good luck!

I do industrial process work most of my NEC work that comes into play is forensic.
During our yearly maintenance window theirs is tons going on with many contractors and mistakes happen. The sizzle takes a while.

A coworker asked the question about the double pull 60 and I never gave his idea any thought till today. Thank you for the info

Curious why you call a 2-pole breaker double pull?

There is a specific provision for this type of installations where GFCI protection is required. That is found in 215.9. However as others have said, the issue is the AFCI protection as the maximum breaker rating for AFCIs is 20 amps.
