Has anyone found a GFCI receptacle fed from a AFCI protected circuit? Got a call from a customer who had received a letter from Square D about the AFCI breaker recall. I checked the two AFCI breakers in the panel and they were date coded AN and not included in the recall. While there she mentioned a pole light that when plugged into the outside GFCI receptacle would trip the GFCI and the AFCI feeding the bedroom. I found that the outside receptacle was supplied from one of the bedroom receptacles. Done probably to save money, as all it took was a box and a foot of NM. This is not prohibited as far as I know, just doesn't seem like good practice.

There is nothing in the NEC that forbids this. I agree, it's not the greatest practice, but a GFCI and AFCI both perform distinct purposes.

But the greater concern is this "pole light" that cause the GFCI to trip. I hope you investigated this, and warned the homeowner of the danger.

Line siding a gfci receptacle is legal.I do it on large customs where the gfci loop would be a ridiculous length to run for one wp.In a tract home I would ask why :confused: Not like the run is that long.

There is absolutely no reason that this installation is a problem in spite of what some may say. :roll: The issue is the problem with the post light.

Its not unsafe.But adds to problem if either or both trip.All depends on if your looking for a cheap way or the best way.No its not the problem with the light.But might be a problem with a few other out side items.

You would have to see the pole light to believe it. It was placed in a hole with concrete poured around it. Since it has a 3 wire cord and plug coming out the bottom, the cord is encased in concrete too. It is plugged into an extension cord lying on the ground the other end of which is plugged into the outside outlet. I told the HO I would advise against using it until it could be checked out. Just when you thought you had seen it all. :(

You must be psychic Jim, so happens they have a fountain pump. Uses a separate extension cord in the other side of the outlet. :D
