I have a delima with afci,s how many receptical can be on a 20 amp afci
I am waiting on my new code book so cant figure it yet.

The code book wouldn't help you figure out this one. The answer is that a 20 amp AFCI breaker can have the same number of receptacles on it that a standard 20 amp breaker. Unfortunately, the code doesn't say how many that is either.

It has been a matter of some debate on this forum, as to whether the code imposes this type of limit. I won't let this thread turn into another such debate. Feel free to do a search, and I am sure you can find one or more of the earlier debates.

How about the old 3 watts per sq. foot?
You have about 2K watts that you can put on a 20 amp circuit, @120vac, therefore 2K divided by 3 is a little more that 800 sq. feet per circuit. So, you could put a receptacle on every stud in an 800 sq. foot house. (theoretically)

Are you referring to the 3VA per sq. foot for load calculation? That really has nothing to do with how many receps you can or should put on 1 circuit.

As Charlie stated, there are a couple of different views on the subject, if you feel like being safe use 180VA per recep.
