Same here. Today I learned…Good God! An AFCI switch. Never knew there was such a thing, anything to make more money off the suckers.

As a side note: say what you want about the NEC, but a permit and inspections would have prevented that unholy abomination of a crawl space panel installation. So I totally agree with not wanting anything to do with that under the “You touch it, you own it” doctrine. So assuming that you (OP) will not be pulling a permit for your little lighting job either, do you care about complying with AFCI requirements?
If so, then personally I would just drop in an AFCI receptacle on the feed to the new lights. More commonly available.
