If in your district AFCI's have to be used in bed room circuits for outlets as well as for lighting, can ceiling fans be used without causing any problems?
Quite a few folks in my area have been having triping problems when using these relatively new devices and are asking if they can legally put their fans on another circuit (not AFCI protected).

Washington State has adopted the 2005 NEC, without altering its rules on AFCI. The rule says that if there is an outlet in a bedroom, then the entire circuit that supplies that outlet, regardless of whatever other outlets it also serves, shall have AFCI. The ceiling fan will be hung from, and connected to, an outlet in the bedroom. So no matter what circuit you use to power the ceiling fan, that entire circuit requires AFCI protection. That, at least, is the rule here.
 
While i dont really care for afci there seems to be millions that work just fine on them.Unless your local ahj removes the requirement your stuck with using them or break the law (not a smart idea).

Thanks guys, guess I'm stuck with it! Maybe I sould suggest to everyone I know that's having this ongoing problem to get a battery powered fan.

If the fan manufacturer's can't solve the problem than maybe someone should make a 240 volt fan.
 
What do you do if it's a studio apartment? Is the entire apartment now required to be on AFCI? If so, how do GFCI recepts work when placed on an AFCI circuit?

They work the same, they are compleatly different and unrelated in the way they work.
